Here’s a link to my list of the top cards in Commander so you can pick and choose the rest of the goodies yourself, although I think Palinchron, Balefire Dragon, Gruul Ragebeast, Balefire Dragon, and Hellkite Tyrant seem especially sick to hit off of Maelstrom Wanderer.A community for passionate EDH players to discuss the competitive meta of the format. You can fill out the rest of the deck with goodstuff, preferably with CMC close to, but not more than, 7. If you cascade into it, you can counter Maelstrom Wanderer and cast him again for free, netting you a free cascade. +Spelljack: Sick tech from a friend of mine. +Food Chain: Food Chain can really quickly tax you out of your commander, but when you’re cascading 6 or more times in a turn, you don’t really have to worry about the long game. But we’re not always going to get the library manipulation we need, so we should make sure we have the tools to help us get value by casting Maelstrom Wanderer over and over. Those are most of the cards we need in order to win with our primary game plan. Even though we have access to green’s excellent land ramp, we should lean a little more towards artifact mana so that we aren’t as likely to be hosed by our own cards. One thing to note about our suite of world-ending spells is that only two of the nine hit artifacts, but eight of the nine destroy lands. We’ll need some cards that can guarantee we hit our haymakers right when we need them. Relying on chance to deliver our board wipes seems pretty foolish. I think this scenario is more likely to result in a win than getting a bunch of plant tokens or stealing a few permanents, so I’m going to focus on these effects (although Avenger and Thievery will probably make the cut anyway). This means that if you happen to flip into a spell that blows up the world (like Jokulhaups or Devastation), it’ll resolve before Maelstrom Wanderer does, and then the only permanent on the board will be your hasty commander that kills in three hits. One of the quirks of cascade is that the spells you cascade into resolve before the spell with cascade. Running library manipulation is a good idea, but I think we can be more ambitious than setting up a cascade into Avenger of Zendikar or Blatant Thievery or whatever. Most of the Maelstrom Wanderer lists I’ve seen are goodstuff decks that use his ability to cast some of the best cards in red, blue, and green, sometimes using library manipulation to set up powerful cascades. Any commander that generates free cards and mana is usually pretty strong, and the Wanderer is no exception.
